We have been breeding stud Angus cattle since 1959 and over 3 generations. The stud was formed by Len Badcock after the purchase of three stud cows in 1958. Most of our bulls are sold locally to commercial breeders from around 18 months to 2 year old and we retain a group of heifers every year as replacements. Excess females are sold in our sale in March, to export or in the sale yard and auctions plus.
We were showing throughout Tasmania extensively up to the 1980's and now we are just getting back into it by training some heifers every year or so.
Regular sales have been held since the 70's and we currently have a sale in late March every year selling both bulls and females and an open day in September where we offer a group of bulls. We also welcome paddock sales throughout the year.
Why Angus Was Chosen In The Beginning
When it became apparent that beef seedstock production was the direction that he wanted to follow, Len selected Angus as his chosen breed. He made this decision from his experience with cross breeding, it gave him confidence in the Angus breed to be the best all round breed available for the Tasmanian climate. As Angus is now a leading breed throughout the world it was clearly a good choice.
Bit About Our Genetics
From the time Len bought the first stud Angus cow we have had a clear focus on female genetic lines, during the last 60 years we have managed to source over 30 different cow families. We have been very focused on only herd book registered cattle that are fully traceable. Sires used over the years have been from New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK and Australia. Importantly we have selected genetics that do well in Tasmania’s environment. Our long term aim has been breeding consistent, quiet and low maintenance cattle suited to a grass fed market. For the full 60 years duration our herd has been self replacing with a focus on retaining the females that raise a top calf every year on time. This has made for a consistent even drop of calves every year.
